Google officially shutting down Google Talk, also known as GTalk or GChat, for good, effectively forcing users to switch over to the newer Hangouts app if they want to continue Google's messaging service.
This announcement comes as less of a surprise than the shutdown of Helpouts.Google Talk launched in 2005.
In May 2013, Google announced that Google Plus Hangouts was replacing the Google Talk app on Android devices and in October last year Google announced that it will stop the GTalk Windows app.
Google is also ending support for third-party clients that are integrated with GTalk, including the instant messaging apps Pidgin, Adium, and Trillian because Hangouts does not have support for the open systems XML-based Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP).
The Google Talk Windows app was a standalone software, while Hangouts would require users to install the Chrome Web browser, if they don't already have that.
The Google Talk service is however still available through Gmail.
